Challenge Yourself

“Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.” Harry S. Truman

Society stands still when there’s no leadership. Nothing is done without leaders taking the opportunity to improve society. But what does that have to do with us?

It has a lot to do with us. Leaders take on the role to guide and influence others in some way. They’re people who stand out because they decided to act on something that they thought needed changing or doing. They challenged themselves to act on their beliefs and decisions.

In fact, we can be leaders. We can influence others and stand out. We can do hard things. So, why aren’t we? Because we haven’t challenged ourselves. We haven’t acted on our beliefs and decisions. Why not? Well, because we don’t want to be going against the flow. Or we’re too scared to discover what will happen if we dared ourselves to go outside of our comfort zone.

In a sense, we don’t have the guts to challenge ourselves.

But we should. We need to. Otherwise society will stand still because there’s no leadership. There’s no progress without people to lead it. Also, if we don’t challenge ourselves, we won’t be able to stand up when we really need to.

Martin Luther King Jr. stated that “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

We need to challenge ourselves not only so we can become leaders, but so we can stand up in our beliefs in controversial times. Where we stand in those times is very important because it shows who we really are, what we really believe and what we stand for.

So, get out there and challenge yourself to do something hard. Even if it’s just doing extracurricular activity, like starting a club, or doing an something outside of school, like an internship, we need to start making a difference by challenging ourselves and doing what we’re passionate about.

When the going gets tough, don’t give up. Don’t turn and run when it gets hard because the battle you are fighting through because you challenged yourself can, and will, be won. It’ll be worth it at the end when you’ve accomplished what you’ve set out to do.

When I feel like giving up
When my heart is hurt too much
Feels like I’ve reached the end
No, I won’t turn and run
This battle will be won
–Britt Nicole, Stand

The time is now to challenge yourself is now. It’s time to influence others and change society for the better. Challenge yourself to do something hard. Go make a difference and make history. Start here, start now.
